British Values

British Values

Ormiston Latimer Academy is dedicated to serving its community and recognizes the diverse nature of the United Kingdom. By promoting equal opportunities and committing to not discriminate against any individual or group based on various factors, we seek to foster an inclusive and respectful environment.

An understanding of Social, moral, spiritual and cultural (SMSC) aspects are developed through the promotion and awareness of a culture of tolerance that exists within the school, through the daily staff and tutor interactions, curriculum topics, the use of specially prepared materials such as those from the Votes4School programme and the enrichment programme, which endeavours to include activities to deliberately expand social capital and knowledge around differences and tolerance.

We believe it is essential to prepare learners for their adult life beyond the formal curriculum. Equipping them with the knowledge and understanding of British values, as outlined in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, is an important aspect of their education.

The five key British values –

  • democracy,
  • the rule of law,
  • individual liberty,
  • mutual respect,
  • tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

form a foundation for a cohesive and harmonious society. By instilling these values in our learners, we are supporting them to become responsible citizens who are respectful and understanding of others’ perspectives and beliefs.

Using strategies within the national curriculum and beyond to secure these outcomes for learners demonstrates a proactive approach to promoting these values. By incorporating them into various aspects of education and school life, we can ensure that learners are given the opportunity to understand and appreciate the significance of these values in the context of the United Kingdom’s diverse society.

We believe that our school’s commitment to fostering a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive environment, while promoting British values, is an important endeavour that will benefit our students and the communities in which they live.
